Ex Machina Review

Sci Fi reviews
Bald robot lady = adult mature film I guess?
In the far flung future of 2015, theaters are playing loud, CGI, action packed spectacles that are technically
science fiction. So when a movie that is a pure science fiction movie that isn’t about some skinhead dude firing a CGI sci-fi blaster while mumbling about jargon, it’s refreshing; even if at its core it is a modern update of a very familiar story.

Ex Machina tells us the story of Caleb (played by Domhnall Gleeson), a nerdy tech guy, who was selected in a Willy Wonka style to go work at his boss, Nathan’s (Oscar Isaac) private lab. When he arrives, he finds the female android named Ava (played by Alicia Vikander), who has a highly intelligent if not pseudo-sentient artificial intelligence. When Ava informs Caleb that Nathan can’t be trusted, Caleb begins to question whether Nathan is abusing the “Robots”.

sci fi movie reviews
She's not a happy lady.
It’s hard to really say what needs to be said. On one hand, it’s an interesting movie. Yet, it’s really just a rehashing of the Frankenstein story, “I, Robot”, and many of the other “mad scientist” and robot rebellion movies. Not only that, but many of the lines are hammy and melodramatic. Sadly, it’s trying far too hard to be serious, when it doesn’t really need to. Likewise, there are some oddities. Why is Nathan continuing to create AI, when he states that they will probably turn on humanity?

Ex Machina isn’t a horrible movie. It’s not a bad movie. In fact, it may be a decent movie. However, I would really only recommend it if you’re dying for a sci-fi movie that isn’t a campy Rambo/Cannon-films action flick with futuristic/sci-fi aesthetics. It’s an honest to goodness sci-fi film, with the only cavet being that it’s suffers from being the same sort of alternate sci-fi film.
